Hedonic Treadmill: Gratitude, The Key to True Happiness

Hedonic Treadmill: Gratitude, the Key to True Happiness

Hedonic Treadmill

Gratitude, The Key to True Happiness

Why is it that when you get a raise, you still run out of money?

Have you ever felt that when you were earning Rp5 million per month, everything was spent on your needs?

But when your salary rises to Rp30 million or even Rp50 million, the money still feels insufficient?

Why is that?

The answer lies in a concept called the hedonic treadmill.

It's not about sports equipment, but about how humans tend to always chase more, without feeling truly satisfied.

What is a hedonic treadmill?

Imagine you're walking on a treadmill.

Your feet keep moving, but you're not getting anywhere.

That's how life is when we're always chasing happiness through stuff, status, or material achievements.

When our income goes up, so do our expectations and lifestyle.

In the past, a used motorcycle was enough to get to work, but now you want a new car.

Eating at a simple stall used to feel good, but now you want to try a five-star restaurant.

It's an endless cycle, as every wish fulfilled will soon be replaced by a new one.

Is it true that money buys happiness?

You might be thinking, "If my salary was bigger, I would be happier".

In fact, money can provide comfort, but not always happiness.

The problem lies in our expectations.

When one desire is fulfilled, we immediately feel the need for something bigger or more expensive.

A big house, a fancy car, or the latest gadget only provides temporary happiness.

As soon as that sense of satisfaction wears off, we're back to feeling deprived and wanting more.

Happiness is about simplicity

The truth is, a happy life doesn't require much.

The key is to be grateful.

Imagine a small circle.

Even though it is small, if it is perfectly round, it remains intact.

But even a big circle, if it's not perfect, still feels lacking.

The same applies to happiness.

Gratitude is how we complete the circle.

It's not about increasing its size, but making sure that what's already there feels enough.

How to Get Off the Hedonic Treadmill?

  1. Realize Your Lifestyle
  2. Before buying something, ask yourself: "Do I really need this, or do I just want it because someone else has it?"

  3. Reduce Comparison
  4. Don't compare yourself to others too often, especially on social media. Focus on the things that make your life meaningful.

  5. Practice Gratitude
  6. Every day, take the time to write down three things you are grateful for. It doesn't have to be something big, fresh air, a hot meal, or time with family will do.

  7. Focus on Experiences, Not Things
  8. Instead of chasing luxury items, spend time creating memories with those closest to you. Happiness often comes from relationships, not possessions.

Start Being Grateful, Right Now

Living in a world full of material temptations is not easy.

But, by being grateful, you can find true happiness without having to constantly chase after something that has no end.

What little things are you grateful for today?

Share it in the comment section!

Maybe your story can inspire others.

Don't forget to spread the word to your friends.

Who knows, they're also in need of a new perspective on happiness.

Because true happiness is not about having everything, but about being enough.
